chart is a good place to start.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Most people know what the outer hoof wall is.\u00a0 It consists of two parts, the outer and inner. \u00a0The inner hoof wall does not have pigment &#8211; it is white.\u00a0 This is also called the &#8220;water line.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">This is often confused with the &#8220;white line&#8221; because someone was not thinking clearly when they named the hoof parts.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.performancehoofcare.com\/0_0_0_0_426_188_csupload_12333577.png?resize=426%2C188\" alt=\"\" width=\"426\" height=\"188\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0This photo shows clearly the dark gray outer hoof wall, the white inner hoof wall (water line) and the &#8220;white line&#8221; which is yellow and is the laminae (sometimes called the golden line).<\/div>\n<div>Why do we care about the water line?\u00a0 Because we often might rasp off all or most of the outer hoof wall right at the ground level, and the water line is a good indicator of where we usually should stop.<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.horseadvice.com\/horse\/messages\/3\/352092.jpg?resize=288%2C350\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"350\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0The white line is also important because it is one indicator of the health of the hoof.\u00a0 Because the white line is made up of the laminae, a stretched white line means there is something wrong.\u00a0 Here are two cases of stretched white line.\u00a0 See how the sole ends and there is space between that and the outer hoof wall.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Sometimes the sole will stretch right over the white line which means you can&#8217;t see stretching from the bottom of the hoof except for other indicators.\u00a0 A stretched white line will also show up as rubbery pieces that stick out around the edge of the sole.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\" http:\/\/www.dressage-academy.com\/images\/laminitis.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"157\" \/><\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.heartnsolehoofcare.com\/images\/09%2520images\/flares.jpg?resize=200%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" \/><\/div>\n<div>People often ask me about this type of thing: \u00a0Is this stretched white line?<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.barefoothorse.com\/images\/Johan-2.jpg?resize=486%2C474\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"474\" \/><\/div>\n<div>Probably there is some based on the shape of this hoof and the long skinny frog, but just seeing lines on the outer hoof wall does not mean the line is stretched.\u00a0 There are laminae on the outer hoof wall and on the inner hoof, that connect together.\u00a0 So you might see those lines from the hoof wall laminae on any hoof that is left to overgrow for too long.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve often seen them and trimmed off the excess wall, only to find a tight white line still.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0Another common question: Is this a stretched white line?<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.healthyhoof.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Summer-December-RF.jpg?resize=408%2C336\" alt=\"\" width=\"408\" height=\"336\" \/><\/div>\n<div>This is a tight white line.\u00a0 A healthy sole will form a ridge around the edge, between the hoof wall and sole.\u00a0 Sometimes this is called the dirt line.\u00a0 Seeing healthy yellowish laminae in that line is fine too.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Ideally you will see the sole growth reflecting the shape of a coffin bone, which is concave on the bottom but the sole also grows around the edge.<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blue-heron-farm.com\/hoofmaidenphotos\/peregrine\/perconcavcompareRF.jpg?resize=584%2C254\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"254\" \/><\/div>\n<div>So the sole should be concave near the tip of the frog, \u00a0but then rise up into a little hill around the edge that slopes down into the ridge\/dirt line just inside the hoof wall (the illustrated hoof shows concavity but the outer hoof wall has been removed past the water line &#8211; this would be a type of correction trim, not a maintenance trim). \u00a0The sole ridge\/callus is only in the front half of the hoof, where the coffin bone is.\u00a0 The sole in the rear near the bars and behind is flatter.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0The point of the frog is also often called the tip of the frog or the apex of the frog.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Our chart at the top of the page\u00a0is missing the pillars of the hoof, which are another part of the hoof often talked about.\u00a0 On the hoof below, the pillars are marked in dark circles.\u00a0 They represent the forward weight bearing part of the hoof (research in wild horses showed that the weight bearing areas of the hoof are between the pillars and the heel of the hoof).<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.westernmainehorseshoeing.com\/0_0_0_0_239_179_csupload_50596676.jpg?resize=239%2C179\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"179\" \/><\/div>\n<div>Something else often talked about is breakover.\u00a0 If the toes are too long\/forward, breakover will be delayed.\u00a0 Sometimes this means the horse can&#8217;t get his front hoof out of the way in time to prevent the back hoof from striking it, or it may interfere with a natural stride.<\/div>\n<div>When we talk about bringing breakover back, we mean that making the hoof less long from heel to toe helps the breakover happen earlier\/faster. \u00a0This is always beneficial to the horse.<\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/54ab2b97e4b08dbf5e1cb50c\/t\/583639c3f5e231d2030f50ed\/1479948759336\/equine-hoof-breakover-barefoot-shoeing-trimming\" alt=\"\" width=\"906\" height=\"562\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0Hopefully everyone knows what the sole is.\u00a0 It is meant to be concave around the tip of the frog. \u00a0This hoof shows both concavity and the sole ridge around the edge of the sole. \u00a0See how it makes a rim like the rim of a crater.<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-wCJfPTmySnk\/TZMdjpmQ1xI\/AAAAAAAAAqc\/3mpApCtQTNU\/s1600\/CRH7.jpg?resize=584%2C561\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"561\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0However, a hoof can be too concave, as in the hoof below.\u00a0 Many club hooves have too much concavity for health.\u00a0 This can also be seen in some hooves of gaited and show horses that are kept abnormally long.<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" notice is when a sole is healthy versus exfoliating versus bruised.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">This is bruising.<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" height=\"194\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">This is a hoof with dark pigment (not bruising).<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" \/><\/div>\n<div>This is shedding or exfoliating sole.\u00a0 It is another situation often confused with white line stretching or disease.\u00a0 It is a natural process that happens when there is wet weather after a period of dry (horses often retain extra sole when it is dry\/the ground is hard).<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"451\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0This is what a healthy frog looks like.\u00a0 It should be wide in the heels, and the central sulcus (depression in the center) should be open like a thumbprint.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" unhealthy frog looks like.\u00a0 The central sulcus has narrowed to a crack and breeds infection.<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone normal frog shedding after growing a new frog underneath.<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0The seat of corn and collateral grooves are also important parts of the hoof anatomy.\u00a0 The collateral grooves can help give an indication of sole and bar depth and health.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The seat of corn helps show the correct angle of the bars and also getting the sole exfoliated in the seat of corn helps show where the heels need to be trimmed down to.<\/div>\n<div>As a general rule, exfoliating\/shedding sole is flaky or powdery and live sole is waxy. \u00a0A caveat to this is that a hoof with contracted heels or a club hoof might have sole that has been compressed in the heels and it will remain waxy even after it is past the point of needing to shed out.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The heel buttress is the part of the hoof wall around the seat of corn that goes back to the widest part of the frog.<\/div>\n<div>It is very important that the heel buttress is trimmed wide and flat to help with a heel first landing.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" heels has lost his heel buttress. \u00a0Some people think of the heel buttress as a platform or landing zone. \u00a0I try to think about if it looks like a horse can comfortably land on it after it&#8217;s been trimmed.<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" know what the bars look like on the internal hoof so you know how they should grow.<\/div>\n<div>Here you can see the bar laminae &#8211; the bars grow at this angle from the heel buttress toward the frog.<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ironfreehoof.com\/images\/hoof-anatomy-bar.jpg?resize=524%2C197\" alt=\"\" width=\"524\" height=\"197\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0If bars are left to grow long, they usually lay over.\u00a0 Abscesses can form from bruising related to trapped gravel, etc underneath long bars.<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0Trimmed, the bars will basically run along the collateral groove.<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.motorqueuenaturalhoofcare.com\/uploads\/1\/1\/3\/0\/11302905\/2529432.png?resize=370%2C257\" alt=\"\" width=\"370\" height=\"257\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0Some horses wear off the bars quite a bit so they don&#8217;t need much trimming.\u00a0 But it is good to keep an eye on them because they can cause problems.\u00a0 Bars can get pushed up inside the hoof, and this apparently happens more in club hooves and can prevent the horse from weighting the heel.<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"736\" height=\"565\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0All of that is the outside of the hoof.\u00a0 Now for the inside.<\/div>\n<div>Something to note is that the coffin bone is also called the pedal bone, P3 and the third phalanx.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mackey.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/hoof-structure.jpg?resize=584%2C361\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"361\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This is the network of blood vessels that supply the hoof.<\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/nebula.wsimg.com\/a7d13d97a7c274c5c3c48d422ab99fe2?AccessKeyId=E7999C583937D6C0C074&amp;disposition=0&amp;alloworigin=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"447\" height=\"299\" \/><\/div>\n<div>This is the rear of the hoof and the big white band is the deep digital flexor tendon.\u00a0 It runs underneath the navicular bone and connects to the underside of the coffin bone.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.hoofforum.com\/gallery\/albums\/Library\/Hoof%2520Dissections\/DSC00889_zps4e041773.jpg?resize=584%2C438\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0On either side of the hoof are the triangular shaped lateral cartilages.\u00a0 These flex apart as the pastern lowers toward the ground.\u00a0 A very tall hoof capsule will jam up over these and prevent some of the natural mobility and shock absorption.\u00a0 Between the lateral cartilages and underneath the deep digital flexor tendon is the digital cushion.\u00a0 It is made up of fibrocartilage.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The digital cushion has a type of cell that changes as a horse develops, from fatty connective tissue to dense fibrocartilage.\u00a0 What causes the cell to change is pressure.\u00a0 So a horse that has not had adequate exercise when young will have a digital cushion that is softer and has less of the dense fibrocartilage cells.\u00a0 Some development can happen later in life, but the horse loses the ability to change the digital cushion with age.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/3\/3e\/Horse_hoof_wild_bare_sagittal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"564\" height=\"461\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>When you see how the deep digital flexor tendon runs under the navicular bone, you can see how many heel issues relate to soft tissue and\/or bone damage from poor hoof angles.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">*********************<\/div>\n<div>The digital cushion provides lift at the back of the hoof. \u00a0For many horses, the toe angle can only become so steep even when the coffin bone is sitting properly in the hoof, because the horse never developed a good digital cushion to provide the lifted angle at the heel of the hoof. \u00a0This means that some horses will always tend toward having a low heel. \u00a0This does not mean we need to let the heels get crushed under the hoof.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" the hoof capsule being jammed up or too much hard work on concussive surfaces, the lateral cartilages can calcify.\u00a0 This is called &#8220;sidebone.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" the hoof to grow down and yet stay connected well enough to support a horse&#8217;s weight even with the force of movement.\u00a0 The laminae basically suspend the horse, as one brutal experiment showed back over a hundred years ago where they cut the soles off the hooves and the bones stayed in place.\u00a0 Some types of laminitis create a trigger where the laminae disconnect without reconnecting well.<\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large aligncenter\" that have been damaged grow back thicker and with forks\/branches that are not normally present in undamaged laminae. \u00a0A laminar wedge in the toe is made up of stretched laminae and\/or the cells that are sent to repair damaged laminae. \u00a0These cells build up into a hard\/brittle substance that hold the hoof wall onto the hoof, but they don&#8217;t do as good of a job as healthy
