Iceland

I’m currently working on sharing this trip with you.

The picture on the home page is a gravel Icelandic road we took in southwest Westfjordland area to a place called Raudasandur (red sand).  The road was fun, the area was remote, vacant, and beautiful.

We spent 10 days driving a 4-wheel drive Jeep Wrangler clockwise around Iceland.  Our intention was to stay off the Ring Road as much as we could.  Our route went from the airport to Reykjavik to Gulfoss.  Then around the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, up and around the Westfjord area, across the top of Iceland to the east, then south, and west back to Reykjavik.  Iceland is one of our favorite places.  The remoteness & physical beauty are so satisfying to the soul.  We left roughed up by the physical conditions, but dying to see it all again.

Highlights:

Volcanic colors & features, Gulfoss, Hraunfossar, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, riding Icelandic horses, walking on a glacier, port towns with colorful boats, several kilometer-long one-lane tunnels, the road to & from Lokinhamrar, high roadside cliffs that plunge hundreds of meters to the sea, Dettifoss, the Borgarfjordur area, the look on someones face when I order olives on my pizza (because I was thinking black olives, they have sour green olives), Jokulsarlon, Iceland’s dairy products, and so much more.
